What is the Story behind the Labubu Doll?

The Labubu doll was created by Hong Kong based Artist Kasing Lung as part of his Monsters book series that was inspired by Nordic folklore.

Labubu’s themselves are a character within the Monsters series, known for their naughty but well meaning traits. They resemble elves and have exaggerated facial expressions along with sharp teeth, large ears and a scruffy appearance.

Why are Labubu so famous?

Labubu’s became famous after Lisa from Blackpink was photographed with a Labubu keychain attached to her bag. This ignited a social media trend that was initiated in South East Asia and became a worldwide trend shortly after. Very soon, labubu’s could be found everywhere, with the sales of Labubu skyrocketting and long queues being formed outside Popmart - the china based retailer that produces and sells labubu.

Why are Labubus so expensive?

Labubus are sold using a blind box model which means that one doesn’t know what color they are getting until after they have opened it. There are also “secret” labubus that could be found within these boxes that are extremely rare. These “secret” labubus are sold at extremely high resale values, thus causing a perception of labubus being very expensive.

In essence, the demand for labubus increased so much that even regular blind boxes are getting marked up from the original retail price, while the ‘secret’ labubus are getting sold for multiple times the original retail price.

Popmart doesn’t officially retail in India, and thus Indian people have to rely on trusted authentic reselling platforms such as 10 Hills Studio to get their labubus.
